Condolences: “Amy O” Garza

• Earlier today we learned of the tragic passing of “Amy O” Garza, popular longtime afternoon personality and Content Director at Alpha Media Rhythmic KBTE (104.9 The Beat)/Lubbock, TX, who was killed over the weekend in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident in San Antonio.

Garza, who we understand is the younger sister of Johnny O, former longtime PD and morning personality at iHeartMedia Rhythmic KBFM (Wild 104)/McAllen-Brownsville, TX, was only 45 years old.

According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Garza was a passenger on the back of a motorcycle on the west side of San Antonio around 2am Saturday, when they were sideswiped by another vehicle, throwing Garza and the driver off the bike. Garza, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet, suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the motorcycle suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

San Antonio police are still looking for the driver of the vehicle, who left the scene of the accident and will face a charge of failure to stop and render aid resulting in death.

In a statement, Jay Richardson, SVP/Market Manager of Alpha Media Lubbock, said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Amy. It is rare to find a person as passionate as she was to her career and community. I had the opportunity to work with Amy for the last 14 years and she was the face and energy behind 104.9 The Beat. It is impossible to replace what she brought to our organization and to the people of Lubbock.” A tribute to Amy O is posted on the Beat’s homepage.

• A GoFundMe account has been established to help cover funeral expenses and to benefit Amy’s son, Xavier. More details are posted at TejanoNation.net.
