Big Dog Goin’ Fishin’
We wanted to send our most sincere best wishes out to “Big Dog Dave” Sherbert, who is hanging up his headphones tomorrow, capping off a 40-plus-year radio career when he officially retires from Blarney Stone Broadcasting WQON (Q100.3)/Grayling, MI. “It’s time,” said the 65-year-old Sherbert, who arrived in Grayling in 1976, three years after his first radio gig in Kalamazoo, MI. “This (local radio) has become a young person’s thing — especially at a rock station,” Sherbert said. “And besides, I want to enjoy the next 20 years or so.” Sherbert says he has no big plans for his retirement, other than to fish more and spend more time playing golf with his wife, Ruth, who retired 18 months ago. “That’s something my wife and I can do together,” he said, adding, “as long as I keep my mouth shut.”
One thing Sherbert won’t be doing, like many retirees from the region, is to head south for the winter. “No plans for anything like that,” he said. “You can’t ice fish in Florida.” Nevertheless, the Big Dog’s departure is leaving a gaping hole in the Q-100.3 lineup, where Sherbert has been a fixture since, well, since forever, it seems.
And he will be missed, as Blarney Stone President Sheryl Coyne said, “We’ll do our best to fill that slot, but we’re not kidding ourselves — nobody can replace Dave Sherbert. Those are some impossible shoes to fill.”
