Condolences: Billy Kidd

• We were saddened to hear that Billy Kidd, longtime afternoon drive talent on Midwest Communications’ Classic Rock 103.5 WIMZ/Knoxville, TN and a 2018 inductee into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, died Tuesday, Nov. 10 at his home in Knoxville at the age of 61.

Kidd, whose given name was William Winningham, was raised in Livingston, TN and began his career at WLIV before working on-air at WRJT/Monterey, TN. He joined WIMZ in 1990, working nights before moving up to morning drive as part of the Phil & Billy show with partner Phil Williams. He took over the WIMZ afternoon drive slot in 2001.

Kidd was an avid supporter of Second Harvest Food Bank, and over the years has helped raise over $500,000 and over 30 tons of food with his annual “Camping For Cans” food drive. An active member of the East Tennessee motorcycle community, Kidd participated in countless rides to help collect toys for children, and to support those that just needed a helping hand. He was also an unapologetic advocate for veterans, active military, law enforcement, firemen, EMTs and all first responders.

Randy Ross, VP/GM of Midwest Communications Knoxville, said of Winningham, “Words can’t describe the tremendous void we feel as we mourn the loss of a treasured member of our radio family and a friend to East Tennesseans everywhere.” The station has a tribute to Winningham at wimz.com and on the station’s Facebook page.
