BTS Donates $1 Million To Black Lives Matter

• K-Pop superstars BTS emphatically stated their solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement in a major way this week, as the group and its Korean record label Big Hit Entertainment have donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter, a rep for Big Hit confirms to Variety.

The mega donation comes on the heels of a June 3 tweet by the band that said, “We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together. #BlackLivesMatter.” Perhaps not coincidentally, the statement came after K-pop fans around the world united to drown out a bunch of racist hashtags on Twitter by posting messages with nonsensical or anti-racist posts.

The $1 million was transferred last week, with Black Lives Matter confirming receipt to Big Hit on Friday. When contacted by Variety, Kailee Scales, Managing Director for Black Lives Matter said, “Black people all over the world are in pain at this moment from the trauma of centuries of oppression. We are moved by the generosity of BTS and allies all over the world who stand in solidarity in the fight for Black lives.”

Yesterday, BTS also appeared on YouTube’s Dear Class of 2020 virtual commencement event alongside former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and scores of other high profile folks.
