WSB/Atlanta Celebrates Its Centennial

• This week Cox Media Group (CMG) celebrates the 100-year anniversary of its flagship brand, WSB Radio/Atlanta. The station  broadcast for the first time on March 15, 1922, and as the first radio station in the Southeast, WSB Radio (the call letters stand for “Welcome South Brother”) was soon nicknamed “The Voice of the South” and today continues delivering the news, weather, sports and traffic that matter to listeners while giving back to the Atlanta community.

Initially heard on AM 750 at a blazing 100 watts of power, WSB’s early broadcasts included music, church services and educational programs. Its programming content continuously evolved through the decades to meet the needs of the Atlanta metro community. In 2010 WSB expanded to a full-time simulcast on 95.5 FM, extending its footprint across the metro Atlanta area.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we are honored to have such a talented and diverse team who have served WSB through the years to help us remain at the forefront of innovation that keeps us connected to our audience and local advertisers,” said Jaleigh Long, VP/GM of CMG’s Atlanta and Athens Radio. “One hundred years of community service is in our DNA, and if there’s anything we are proud of, it’s the station’s rich history of uplifting the surrounding community. WSB’s never-ending commitment to innovation and embracing change will propel the us into the next century and beyond.”

The recipient of eight prestigious Marconi Awards and countless other industry awards over the past century, WSB’s marquee philanthropic program, the 95.5 WSB Care-a-Thon, has raised more than $28 million for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Plus, over the past three decades, more than a half-million gifts have been placed in the hands of Georgia children in foster care through Clark Howard’s annual “Christmas Kids” campaign.

“It’s an incredibly proud moment for all of us at CMG to celebrate 100 years of WSB Radio,” said Rob Babin, CMG’s SVP of Radio. “I salute the many WSB employees who have committed their talent, skills, and dedication to serving their fellow citizens over the past 100 years. Equally important, WSB Radio remains relevant thanks to the support of our advertisers and loyal audience over the years.”

95.5 WSB will celebrate the past 100 years by highlighting the rich tradition of the station throughout 2022.
